Chikungunya: che cos’è?
La febbre da virus chikungunya è una malattia virale il cui termine significa “diventare contorto” o “camminare ricurvo” a causa dei sintomi caratteristici della malattia: le lombalgie e le atralgie spesso molto debilitanti.
Eziologia
Il virus chikungunya è un virus a RNA che appartiene alla famiglia Togaviridae , trasmesso principalmente da zanzare del genere Aedes aegypti e Aedes albopictus.
Segni e sintomi della febbre chikungunya
Dopo un periodo di incubazione di che va da 3 a 12 giorni, inizio brusco con febbre e atralgieche possono immobilizzare il malato; altri sintomi piuttosto comuni sono:
Nausea
Brividi
Cefalea
Affaticamento
Rash cutaneo
Il coinvolgimento articolare interessa le piccole articolazioni di mani, polsi, caviglie e piedi. Un decorso più grave della malattia può essere osservato nei neonati (esposti intrapartum) negli anziani (età >65 anni)e con comorbilità( diabete, ipertensione, malattie cardiovascolari).
La malattia è generalmente a decorso benigno,i sintomi si risolvono nel giro di 7-10 giorni, ma alcuni soggetti possono presentare persistenza della poliartrite o andare incontro a ripresa del quadro reumatologico anche a distanza di settimane o mesi dall’esordio della malattia.
Terapia
Non esiste un vaccino approvato contro la il virus chikungunya . La terapia si basa sulla somministrazione antipiretici e antifiammatori, integrazione di liquidi e riposo a letto.
